I began this series just proir to our first covid lockdown in early 2020. I had been hand-making natural paints with my students, then when the lockdown occured, my students were unable to come to my studio, and the art shops closed.
Lockdown restrictions allowed walking in the bush, where the earth smells and muted colours soothed the spirit. Like for so many, the lockdown was a time to re-evaluate everything. For myself, it clarified a commitment towards environmentally sustainable actions within my life and my art practise.
Prior to the lockdowns I had been making collaged PASTE-UPS in city laneways, then post covid, avoiding urban populations became important. It made sense to morph my art practise to combine environmentally sustainable rice glue, handmade paints and paper collage to depict the natural world.
BOTANICAL 2 features paint that I made from a blue eco pigment powder, natural brown iron oxide and white ochre clay, found in the bush near Creswick, Victoria.
